Psychic Academy is a supernatural action romantic comedy manga written and illustrated by Katsu Aki. In a present-day Japan where some people are born with extraordinary elemental powers called "aura abilities," Ai Shiomi is a mild-mannered teenager from a prestigious psychic family who just wanted a normal life. That plan falls apart when he's enrolled in the Psychic Academy — an elite school for aura users — largely because his older brother happens to be the legendary hero who once defeated the Dark Overlord, and now teaches there. Outshined at every turn and constitutionally allergic to drama, Ai tries to keep his head down while reconnecting with his childhood friend Orina and navigating the attentions of the mysterious, ethereal Mew — a girl whose rare and powerful aura seems somehow connected to the darkness his brother once sealed away.

The series strikes a comfortable balance between lighthearted harem comedy and escalating supernatural action, with Ai's budding aura abilities gradually revealing a destiny far bigger than he bargained for. Katsu Aki's art is clean and energetic, particularly in battle sequences, and the elemental aura system — fire, water, lightning, earth, light, and more — gives the action a satisfying variety. The romantic tension between Ai, Orina, and Mew gives the series its emotional through-line, and the slow-building mystery around Mew's origins keeps the stakes from ever feeling entirely frivolous.

A solid mid-2000s TOKYOPOP staple that will appeal to fans of school-based supernatural shonen with a romantic edge.
