Killer is Dead for the PlayStation 3 is the latest vision from SUDA51 — the auteur director behind Killer7, No More Heroes, and Lollipop Chainsaw — and a spiritual successor to both of those games in style, tone, and gleeful disregard for conventional game design. Mondo Zappa is an executioner employed by an organization called Bryan Execution Firm, tasked with hunting down criminals of the most dangerous and bizarre variety. His assignments take him from the surface of the moon to the depths of the ocean as he pursues targets whose crimes blend the mythological with the cyberpunk and the grotesque. The story is deliberately fragmented and surreal — less interested in linear narrative than in aesthetic impact and stylized set pieces.

Combat is fast, stylish, and built around Mondo's two signature tools: his katana in his right hand and his cybernetic left arm in the other. The arm transforms into a drill, a cannon, and other weapons depending on upgrades purchased between missions, while katana combos build up Adrenaline Burst — a brief powered-up state that unlocks more devastating finishing moves. Perfectly timed blocks trigger Headshots, a slow-motion counter that deals massive damage. Between main missions, side missions and Gigolo Mode — in which Mondo must covertly ogle women to earn their affection and unlock item rewards — provide additional content with the kind of irreverent humor that defines Suda's work.

The game's visual style is its most celebrated feature — a moving comic book rendered in stark high-contrast cel shading, with Akira Yamaoka composing the soundtrack alongside Ryo Koike. Yamaoka is best known for the Silent Hill series, and his score here carries the same atmosphere of beautiful unease that made that franchise's music legendary.
