Kingdom Hearts II for the PlayStation 2 is the direct sequel to the beloved original and widely regarded as the pinnacle of the PS2-era Kingdom Hearts experience.

The story picks up one year after Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, with Sora, Donald, and Goofy awakening from a long sleep in Twilight Town — a quiet town caught between night and day. Before Sora re-enters the picture, players take control of a boy named Roxas, who is living out the last days of his summer vacation with friends while being haunted by someone else's memories. Roxas eventually crosses paths with Sora, and the two discover they share a deep and mysterious connection. Together with King Mickey, the group resumes their search for Riku while facing a new threat: the Nobodies, beings without hearts who serve the shadowy Organization XIII — thirteen powerful figures whose true agenda gradually unfolds across the game's sweeping story.

Kingdom Hearts II refines and dramatically expands every aspect of the original. The new Drive command lets Sora fuse with Donald or Goofy to transform into powerful alternate forms — Valor Form, Wisdom Form, Master Form, and more — each with distinct abilities and combat styles. Reaction Commands add a stylish layer of context-sensitive actions during battles and boss fights, with precise timing unlocking devastating counters and cinematic finishers. The world roster is the most expansive in the series, spanning both returning favorites and brand-new Disney worlds including Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron, Mulan, and Beauty and the Beast. A new Gummi Ship system overhauls travel between worlds with fully 3D on-rails shooter sequences, and the overall combat pace is faster, more fluid, and more visually spectacular than its predecessor.

Released in Japan in December 2005 and in North America in March 2006, Kingdom Hearts II exceeded the original in both scope and critical reception, earning an average score of 87% on MobyGames. It pushed the PS2 hardware to its visual limits — reviewers called it one of the best-looking games on the platform — and its emotionally resonant conclusion tied together the threads of the first two games in a deeply satisfying way. Followed by Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix in Japan, which added new Organization XIII boss fights, additional story scenes, and a higher difficulty mode, the standard North American release remains the definitive Western version of the game.
