The story follows Sora, a 14-year-old boy living on the peaceful Destiny Islands with his closest friends Riku and Kairi, dreaming of exploring worlds beyond their own. One night their island is swallowed by darkness and the three are separated — Sora is thrust into a battle against shadowy creatures called the Heartless, and discovers he wields the Keyblade, a mysterious weapon that is the only force capable of defeating them. Teaming up with Donald Duck and Goofy — sent by the missing King Mickey to find the Keyblade wielder — Sora travels across iconic Disney worlds to rescue the seven Princesses of Heart, locate his friends, and seal the door to darkness before it consumes all worlds.

Kingdom Hearts for the PlayStation 2 is a landmark action-RPG born from an extraordinary collaboration between Square and The Walt Disney Company — a game that had no right to work as well as it does, and yet became one of the most beloved RPGs of its generation.

Kingdom Hearts broke new ground for Square by introducing a real-time action combat system in place of traditional turn-based battles — players attack, dodge, and cast magic in fluid real time while managing a menu of spells, items, and party commands mid-battle. Sora levels up and learns new abilities over time, and Keyblades collected throughout the journey each carry different stat boosts and can be forged through an item synthesis system. Each Disney world is self-contained and faithful to its source film's aesthetic, featuring authentic voice performances from the original Disney cast alongside Final Fantasy fan favorites including Cloud, Squall, Aerith, and Yuffie.

The orchestral score — including the iconic theme song "Simple and Clean" by Hikaru Utada — was praised as one of the finest in the PS2 library.

Directed by Tetsuya Nomura in his first directorial role, Kingdom Hearts launched in Japan in March 2002 and in North America in September 2002 to widespread critical acclaim. It was ranked the 22nd best PlayStation 2 game of all time by IGN in 2007, received the Best Art Style/Direction award from IGN, and was featured in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die. It went on to spawn a sprawling franchise across over a dozen games and platforms, making this PS2 original the essential starting point for the entire Kingdom Hearts saga.
