Kisō Louga - PC Engine Super CD-ROM²

Kisō Louga (機装ルーガ) for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM² is a Japan-exclusive turn-based strategy game developed and published by Kogado Studio. Set in a fantasy world, players take on the role of Weiss, a warrior of the Kumes people, tasked with defending the ancient ruins of Vastool and protecting Elena — a young woman being pursued by enemy soldiers. The story unfolds through anime-style cutscenes between missions, alternating with tactical battles across a series of increasingly complex scenarios.

Gameplay is pure tactical strategy — characters are moved across overhead battlefield maps, and contact with an enemy unit triggers a separate menu-driven combat screen where players select from Attack, Item, Special, and other commands. Castles play a central role in each battle: friendly castles serve as retreat and healing points, while capturing enemy castles is often a key mission objective. Castle defenses include archers and catapults, and gates must be destroyed before entry. Many missions involve multi-faction conflicts, adding strategic complexity beyond simple two-sided combat.

The game's standout feature is its weapon manufacturing system. Using ores, original materials, and the party's crafting capabilities, players forge their own weapons and armor — swords, spears, bows, shields, and more — each with distinct characteristics suited to different tactical approaches. Building a loadout tailored to each mission's demands is central to the experience.

Released in Japan on December 3, 1993, Kisō Louga was never localized outside Japan and received a sequel — Kisō Louga II: The Ends of Shangrila — in 1995. This is a Japan-import disc. The PC Engine Super CD-ROM² is region-locked and this disc will only play on a Japanese PC Engine with a Super CD-ROM² interface unit, or a PC Engine Duo system. All text and menus are in Japanese.
