Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei is a Japanese satirical comedy manga series by Koji Kumeta about Nozomu Itoshiki, a high school teacher who is the personification of pessimism. Often seen wearing traditional Japanese attire and prone to dramatic outbursts of despair, Nozomu finds himself in a state of perpetual hopelessness over the trivialities and absurdities of modern life. His outlook is constantly challenged by his students, most notably Kafuka Fuura, an impossibly optimistic girl who views every tragedy through a positive lens, leading to surreal and biting social commentary on Japanese culture and human nature.

The series is renowned for its razor-sharp wit, rapid-fire puns, and distinctive art style that blends retro Showa-era aesthetics with modern character designs. It is highly regarded for its ability to tackle sensitive societal issues, mental health, and political taboos through a lens of dark, absurdist humor that remains relevant and provocative.

It was successfully adapted into multiple anime seasons and OVAs by studio SHAFT, directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, which further popularized the series' unique visual language and frantic comedic pacing.
