The Lawnmower Man for the Sega Genesis is an action platformer loosely adapted from the 1992 science fiction film of the same name — itself only loosely connected to the Stephen King short story that inspired it — developed by Sales Curve Interactive and published by Time Warner Interactive in 1994. Players control either scientist Dr. Lawrence Angelo or his colleague Carla Parkette as they enter the virtual reality world known as Cyberspace to confront CyberJobe — the psychic superhuman that Angelo's own intelligence-expanding VR experiments accidentally created, who is now threatening to seize control of the worldwide computer network. Locations visited include real-world environments from the film such as Harley's Gas 'Er Up filling station, The Shop's shadowy research facility, and city streets, populated by possessed gas pumps, evil bikers, and other eccentric threats that reflect the film's peculiar blend of techno-horror and camp.
The gameplay alternates between three dramatically different modes that keep the experience unpredictable throughout. Side-scrolling run-and-gun platformer sections play similarly to Contra or Metal Slug, with players collecting weapon upgrades and data discs — a set number of which morphs into a Virtual Suit that absorbs one hit. Computer terminals scattered across levels can be hacked by completing timed pattern-matching mini-games, rewarding success with extra power-ups. Between platforming stages, first-person VR sequences drop players into auto-scrolling psychedelic virtual reality tunnels where they dodge flashing walls at high speed — Sega-16 described the game's most spectacular space-shooting levels as looking "kind of like if Space Harrier II took LSD," with spinning vortex effects that rank among the most visually striking things the Genesis hardware ever produced. GamePro praised the Genesis version's combination of "above average" run-and-gun adventure, "hypnotic" first-person flying, and "brain-teasing" puzzles, scoring it 4/5 for both sound and fun factor. Two-player simultaneous co-op is fully supported, with each player taking one of the two available characters.
The Lawnmower Man was released for the Sega Genesis by Time Warner Interactive in 1994 — one year after the SNES version, making the Genesis release the later and rarer of the two cartridge ports. The game was a product of its moment: virtual reality was the defining technological obsession of the early 1990s, and the 1992 film — starring Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey — rode that wave to become a surprise hit despite its critical reception. The Genesis cartridge captures a very specific cultural anxiety about VR, artificial intelligence, and digital consciousness that feels both dated and prescient in equal measure, making it an interesting historical artifact alongside its status as an entertaining if uneven licensed game. A complete copy with box and manual is increasingly difficult to find.
