Paris, 1742. A coffin is found floating on the River Seine, its lid marked with a single word written in blood: "Psalms." Inside lies the body of Lia de Beaumont, a beautiful noblewoman and spy. Her brother D'Eon de Beaumont, a knight of France and member of the Le Secret du Roi - the secret intelligence service of King Louis XV - is consumed by grief and a drive to find her killers. His investigation pulls him into a conspiracy that spreads from the darkest alleys of Paris to the glittering courts of Versailles, St. Petersburg, and London. At its center is a terrible power - a form of sorcery bound to poetry and psalms that can raise the dead. Lia's soul, unable to rest, begins to possess her brother's body during moments of crisis, transforming D'Eon into a female-presenting warrior who fights with her spirit's full strength. The line between Deon and Lia blurs as the conspiracy deepens, historical figures appear as major characters, and pre-Revolutionary France is revealed as a battleground for forces that neither the living nor the dead can easily stop.

Le Chevalier D'Eon is a 24-episode historical dark fantasy series produced by Production I.G - the studio behind Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh, FLCL, and Patlabor 2 - directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, written and created by Tow Ubukata, and scored by Michiru Oshima, whose credits include Fullmetal Alchemist 2003.

The series is loosely based on the real historical figure Charles-Genevieve-Louis-Auguste-Andre-Timothee d'Eon de Beaumont, an 18th-century French spy and diplomat who is one of history's most documented cases of cross-dressing, and incorporates real figures including King Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour, the Empress Elizabeth of Russia, and King George III of Britain as significant characters.
