Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360 is a turn-based JRPG developed by Mistwalker and feelplus, directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi — creator of the original Final Fantasy series — with music by Nobuo Uematsu, character designs by manga artist Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk, Vagabond), and story segments written by award-winning Japanese novelist Kiyoshi Shigematsu. The game follows Kaim Argonar, an immortal soldier who has lived for over one thousand years and remembers nothing of his past. The story is set in a world undergoing a magic-industrial revolution, where nations have learned to harness magical energy as a power source. A catastrophic event draws Kaim into a conspiracy that forces him to confront the people and memories he has lost across ten centuries.

Combat is turn-based with a traditional party system spread across four discs. Kaim and the other immortal characters learn skills by absorbing them from mortal party members over multiple battles, requiring time spent fighting alongside specific characters to permanently acquire abilities. Mortal characters level up and grow their stats normally. The Ring System times attacks during battle, with well-executed rings amplifying damage and adding secondary effects. Dozens of optional bosses and post-game dungeons extend the campaign considerably past its main ending.

The game's most celebrated feature is its "Thousand Years of Dreams" — short illustrated story segments narrated in Japanese by actress Takako Matsu, depicting fragments of Kaim's past lives. These sequences are text-based with painted illustrations and a separate minimalist score, and sit apart from the main game in tone and format. They were written entirely by Shigematsu and are widely considered among the finest writing in any RPG. Lost Odyssey released in Japan on December 6, 2007 and in North America on February 12, 2008. It remains an Xbox 360 exclusive and has never been ported or remastered.
