Lux-Pain for the Nintendo DS is a dark and atmospheric visual novel adventure set in Kisaragi City, a seemingly ordinary Japanese town hiding a deeply disturbing secret. A parasitic entity known as SILENT has been spreading through the population — infecting people through their darkest emotions of hate and despair, and driving them to commit violent and inexplicable crimes. Players step into the role of Atsuki Saijo, a teenage agent working for a covert organization called FORT who has undergone a dangerous surgical procedure to embed the power of Lux-Pain into his left arm — a mysterious psychic ability that causes his right eye to glow golden and grants him the power to reach inside people's minds.
Using the DS stylus, players dig directly into the thoughts and emotions of the city's residents on the touch screen, rooting out SILENT worms hiding deep within their psyches before the corruption reaches the victim's heart and causes a game over.
The game is structured across distinct phases: investigation, where players explore Kisaragi City and speak with characters to gather clues; mind-diving, where the stylus mechanic is used to excavate and destroy worms in real time; and boss battles against powerful SILENT entities. Full voice acting accompanies the key scenes, and the soundtrack was composed by Kenji Ito, known for his work on the SaGa and Romancing SaGa series.
A rare and niche Ignition Entertainment localization, Lux-Pain is a uniquely unsettling visual novel that has since built a cult following among fans of Japanese DS adventure games.
