Mega Man II - Gameboy

Mega Man II for the original Game Boy is the second entry in Capcom's handheld Mega Man series — a side-scrolling action platformer that blends content from NES Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 into a single portable adventure. Dr. Wily has stolen an experimental time machine from the Chronos Institute and used it to travel 37 years into the future, returning with rebuilt versions of eight Robot Masters and a sinister new weapon: Quint — a brainwashed, weaponized version of Mega Man's own future self, armed with a pogo-stick jackhammer called the Sakugarne.

Players choose from four initial stages — drawing bosses from Mega Man 2 — then unlock four more from Mega Man 3, before storming Wily's Fortress. Defeating each Robot Master awards their unique weapon, and for the first time in the Game Boy series, the slide move and Rush support robot are both available, bringing the gameplay closer to the feel of NES Mega Man 3. E-Tanks can be collected and stored for emergency health restoration, adding a strategic resource layer to the classic run-and-gun formula.

Mega Man II was developed in just five months by Thinking Rabbit — a studio with no prior Mega Man experience — and is widely considered the weakest entry in the five-game Game Boy series, with level designs that closely mirror their NES counterparts rather than reimagining them for the handheld. As a result, Capcom returned development to Minakuchi Engineering for all subsequent Game Boy entries. Despite its reputation, it remains a complete and playable Mega Man game and a necessary part of any complete Game Boy Mega Man collection. The game received a Player's Choice budget reprint in 2000 and has since been re-released on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online.
