Mega Man Legends - PS1

Mega Man Legends for the PlayStation is Capcom's first fully 3D Mega Man game and the beginning of a beloved sub-series that reimagines the franchise as an open-world action-adventure RPG. Set thousands of years into the future of the original Mega Man timeline, the world is almost entirely covered in water, with small islands dotting the surface and hiding vast underground ruins full of ancient technology. Mega Man Volnutt is a Digger, an explorer who ventures into these ruins to excavate Quantum Refractors, the primary energy source of this distant future. He lives aboard the flutter ship with Roll Caskett, his partner and mechanical genius, and Roll's grandfather Barrell. After a forced landing on Kattelox Island, they discover the island is rich in Refractors but also home to a resurgent threat that could destroy everything.

Players explore Kattelox Island's town and surrounding areas in full 3D, talking to residents, taking on side quests, and venturing into underground ruins to fight Reaverbots, the autonomous mechanical guardians of the ancient world. The Bonne family, a clan of lovable pirate antagonists led by Tron Bonne and her 41 Servbots, provides a recurring villain presence across the story. Roll crafts special weapons for Mega Man from parts found in the ruins, ranging from a shield that deflects projectiles to a machine gun and a rapid-fire buster upgrade. A lock-on targeting system handles combat in the game's third-person shooter sequences.

Developed by Capcom Production Studio 2 under producers Keiji Inafune and Yoshinori Kawano, Mega Man Legends released in North America on September 10, 1998 to positive reviews. It was followed by Mega Man Legends 2 in 2000, the side game The Misadventures of Tron Bonne in 1999, and a Game Boy Advance entry. A planned third installment, Mega Man Legends 3, was cancelled in 2011 after a vocal fan campaign for its revival, making the original PS1 games the complete legacy of this uniquely warm and charming corner of the Mega Man universe.
