"A cardboard box? I heard stories from my uncle, but I always thought he was pulling my leg... I... I've got no comment."

Released in 2004 for the Nintendo GameCube, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a cinematic remake of the 1998 PlayStation classic that follows legendary operative Solid Snake as he is pulled out of retirement for a high-stakes solo infiltration mission. Set on the remote Alaskan island of Shadow Moses, Snake must neutralize the rogue special forces unit FOXHOUND, led by his genetic double, Liquid Snake, who has seized a nuclear disposal facility and threatens a global strike using the bipedal tank, Metal Gear REX. As Snake rescues hostages and sabotages the terrorists' plans, he uncovers a web of government conspiracies, genetic experimentation, and personal betrayals that challenge his understanding of his own origins.

The gameplay of The Twin Snakes preserves the original's "Tactical Espionage Action" while modernizing the experience with mechanics originally introduced in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Players navigate 3D environments primarily through stealth, utilizing tools like the Soliton Radar to avoid enemy cones of vision, hiding in lockers or cardboard boxes, and dragging fallen guards to conceal evidence. The remake introduces a first-person aiming mode, allowing for precise shots at environmental objects or enemy limbs, and adds the ability to hang from ledges or use tranquilizer weapons for non-lethal playthroughs. These new abilities significantly alter the game's balance, as the original's level layouts were not initially designed for first-person precision, often making certain boss encounters and camera-dodging segments easier to navigate.

Cameos: Reflecting its status as a GameCube exclusive, Otacon’s office features a GameCube console and a WaveBird controller on his desk, along with small statues of Mario and Yoshi that produce iconic sound effects and 1Up icons when shot.

Eternal Darkness Tie-ins: Developed by Silicon Knights, the game includes several nods to their previous title, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, such as "distraction magazines" featuring the character Alex Roivas on the cover.

Hollywood Influence: The remake’s highly stylized cutscenes were directed by Japanese filmmaker Ryuhei Kitamura, who utilized excessive "bullet time" effects and over-the-top choreography heavily inspired by The Matrix and contemporary action cinema.
