Metal Max Xeno for the PlayStation 4 is a post-apocalyptic JRPG developed by Kadokawa Games and Cattle Call, the sixth mainline entry in the Metal Max series and only the second to reach Western audiences after 2005's Metal Saga on PS2. The world has been nearly exterminated by NOA, a rogue AI that turned humanity's own war machines against them decades ago. Most of Earth's population is dead. Survivors huddle in a ruined base called Dystokio, venturing into the devastated wasteland to scavenge, fight, and push back against the machines that still patrol the wreckage of civilization. Players take the role of Talis, a young soldier who emerges from stasis to join the resistance, accompanied by a recruitable cast of survivors each carrying their own scarred history.

Tank combat is the defining mechanical element of Metal Max Xeno, inherited from the series' long history dating back to 1991 on the Famicom. Players customize a fleet of tanks with interchangeable cannons, sub-weapons, and defensive equipment, then take them into the open wasteland to battle mutated creatures and mechanical enemies. On-foot exploration in ruins and structures supplements tank combat, with characters wielding personal weapons in more confined encounters. The open world expands progressively as players push back enemy patrols, with Wanted monsters serving as the game's hardest content and hunting them for reward money providing the core gameplay loop outside of story missions. Deep tank customization allows for highly tailored loadouts suited to specific encounter types.

Metal Max Xeno released in Japan on April 19, 2018 and in North America on September 25, 2018, published by NIS America. It was followed by Metal Max Xeno Reborn in 2020 in Japan and 2022 worldwide, an expanded remake on Nintendo Switch and PS4 with a more open world structure. PlayStation LifeStyle called the original "a deep and rewarding experience" once its early game systems open up, noting that the premise and tank combat combine into something "quite unlike any other JRPG" on the platform.
