Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth for the Nintendo DS is the fifth entry in Capcom's beloved Ace Attorney series and its first significant spin-off — a game that takes the franchise out of the courtroom entirely and puts players directly on the crime scene. Set between the events of Trials and Tribulations and Apollo Justice, the story follows the impeccably dressed prosecutor Miles Edgeworth — Phoenix Wright's greatest rival — who returns from an overseas business trip to find a corpse in his own office and something stolen from it. What begins as a single bewildering crime scene expands across five interconnected cases into a sprawling conspiracy involving a shadowy international smuggling ring, Interpol, and a cast of new and returning characters including the perpetually hapless Detective Gumshoe, the sharp-tongued Franziska von Karma, and Kay Faraday — a quick-witted young woman who claims to be a master thief and becomes Edgeworth's unlikely partner in pursuit of the truth.

Investigations departs radically from the series formula by replacing courtroom trials with fully interactive crime scene investigation. Players explore crime scenes in a third-person adventure game format, examining areas, interacting with objects, and speaking with witnesses and suspects — freely moving Edgeworth's sprite around each environment using either the touch screen stylus or the d-pad. Evidence can be examined in 3D, rotating it to inspect specific parts for hidden details. The Logic system is the game's signature new mechanic: as Edgeworth investigates, he stores observations and partial deductions in a Logic section of his organizer, and players must connect related ideas together to make critical leaps in reasoning that open new lines of inquiry. When confronting witnesses, the Argument and Rebuttal system mirrors the classic cross-examination mechanic — pressing for elaboration and presenting contradicting evidence — but flows seamlessly from investigation rather than requiring a separate courtroom scene. Kay's Little Thief gadget can reconstruct crime scenes holographically using gathered evidence, adding another layer to the puzzle-solving.

Directed by Takeshi Yamazaki and produced by Motohide Eshiro — who conceived the idea while working on the DS version of Trials and Tribulations — Ace Attorney Investigations released in Japan on May 28, 2009 and in North America on February 16, 2010. The game sold 172,000 units in its opening week in Japan and earned an 86 Metascore on Metacritic. It won the Aggie Award for Best Character of 2010 for Miles Edgeworth, and was named Best Adventure Title of 2010 on Nintendo DS by Nintendo World Report. A direct sequel — Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit — was released in Japan in 2011 but never officially localized in English, making this first entry the only Investigations game available in English on DS cartridge. The game has since been included in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC, released in 2024.
