Mortal Kombat for the original Game Boy is the handheld port of Midway's watershed 1992 arcade fighting game — the game that introduced digitized actor sprites, iconic characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang, and the infamous Fatality finishing move system that ignited a national debate and ultimately led to the creation of the ESRB ratings system. Seven warriors compete in a deadly tournament to determine the fate of Earthrealm, culminating in boss fights against the four-armed giant Goro and the shape-shifting sorcerer Shang Tsung.
The Game Boy version features six playable characters — Johnny Cage is absent — across three stages: The Pit, The Courtyard, and Goro's Lair. Special moves and Fatalities are all present but require deliberate, slower inputs than the arcade, and the notorious Nintendo content policy of the era resulted in modified Fatalities. Sub-Zero's spine rip is replaced, and Raiden's Fatality was redesigned. Goro is playable through a hidden unlock, and Game Link Cable support allows two-player versus matches. The audio is widely regarded as one of the harshest on the platform.
Developed by Probe Software and published by Acclaim in 1993, the Game Boy port is considered the weakest of the console versions — but remains a genuine collector's piece as the only handheld release of the original Mortal Kombat. Nintendo Life called it "one to avoid" while the Bad Game Hall of Fame gave it a thorough retrospective, noting the core gameplay problems are significant. For Mortal Kombat completionists and Game Boy library collectors, this is a notable and increasingly hard-to-find cartridge.
