Kyoji Miura is a dedicated kendo student with a bright future ahead of him — until the day his respected instructor, Masanari Tate, begins to change. Driven by a force beyond his control, Tate reveals himself to be the reincarnation of Yawaru, an ancient Inca warrior who believes the modern world has grown corrupt and must be destroyed to be reborn. As other reincarnated souls begin to awaken around him, Kyoji discovers that he too carries an ancient spirit within: Bilka, the very warrior who once stood against Yawaru in a past life and brought down the Inca Empire in the process. Now history threatens to repeat itself, and Kyoji must choose — honor the destiny written in his soul, or forge his own path and try to save the man he once called his teacher.
Nazca is a compact and atmospheric late-90s anime that draws on the rich mythology of the Inca Empire to tell a story of reincarnation, loyalty, and fate. Directed by Hiroko Tokita and animated by Radix, the series pairs its grounded kendo setting with an increasingly mystical storyline, set against an evocative score of Andean-inspired music. Though relatively obscure in the West, the series earned a curious piece of pop culture history when footage from episode 3 was used in the opening credits of the American sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, introducing the show to millions of unsuspecting viewers.
