NHL Open Ice 2 on 2 Challenge for the PlayStation is Midway's arcade hockey game, ported from their 1995 coin-op cabinet and arriving on PS1 in 1996. The game strips hockey down to its most chaotic fundamentals: two players per side, a full NHL license with real teams and players from the 1995-96 season, and none of the penalties, offsides, or icing rules that govern the simulation hockey games of the same era. Two-minute brawls on ice, essentially, with real names and jerseys attached.

Gameplay is completely button-based with no simulation elements. Checking is aggressive and frequent, hitting the ice to cause turnovers is the primary defensive strategy, and the two-on-two format means every player is constantly involved. A battery of special shots and power plays add variety, and the short match length keeps games moving quickly. Up to four players can compete in local multiplayer through a combination of controllers. The game features both the NHL and NHLPA licenses, meaning real team names, logos, and player names are all present.

Developed and published by Midway, NHL Open Ice 2 on 2 Challenge released on PS1 in 1996. The original arcade version was one of Midway's most successful sports cabinets of the mid-1990s alongside NBA Jam and NFL Blitz. The game supports one to four players.
