Japan, 1637. The Tokugawa Shogunate's brutal persecution of Christianity has driven the faithful underground. When Shiro Amakusa — believed by his followers to be the prophesied Child of Heaven — leads the doomed Shimabara Rebellion, the Shogunate's forces crush it with overwhelming violence. Then Shiro comes back: not as a savior, but as a demon lord reborn through dark ritual, assembling an army of resurrected fallen warriors. Against this supernatural apocalypse stands the one-eyed wandering swordsman Jubei Yagyu, reluctant agent of the Shogunate, who must fight former heroes-turned-demons across a Japan sliding toward darkness.
Ninja Resurrection is a two-episode OVA directed by Yasunori Urata, produced by Phoenix Entertainment, written by Kensei Date, and scored by Masamichi Amano, based on Futaro Yamada's novel Makai Tenshō. ADV Films' decision to release the series as Ninja Resurrection caused much confusion among anime fans, as some were led to believe it was a sequel to Ninja Scroll — both titles featured a main character named Jubei, and the title logo was designed similarly to Ninja Scroll's.
This is the original ADV Films VHS release — predating the 1998 DVD edition. The VHS was released in two separate dubbed volumes before the combined DVD collected both episodes on a single disc.
