Feudal Japan, the Tokugawa era. A wandering mercenary swordsman named Jubei Kibagami encounters a poisoned kunoichi — a female ninja named Kagero whose body carries a deadly toxin as both curse and weapon — and saves her life at the cost of being blackmailed by Dakuan, a scheming government spy, into investigating the Eight Devils of Kimon: a clan of supernaturally enhanced ninja assassins working for a shadowy warlord named Himuro Gemma. Gemma is an old enemy of Jubei's — the man who ordered the massacre of his former clan and who cannot be killed by ordinary means. The Eight Devils include a man whose skin is stone, a woman whose hair is razor wire, a man who controls bees that live inside his body, and worse. Each confrontation is a set piece of escalating graphic violence and visual invention. Kagero fights alongside Jubei with quiet resolve and an awareness that her poisoned body makes her untouchable. The final battle demands everything both of them have.
 
Ninja Scroll is the 1993 theatrical film written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri — the director of Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Goku: Midnight Eye, Cyber City Oedo 808, Birdy the Mighty, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust — produced by Madhouse with JVC, Toho, and Movic. It premiered in Japanese theaters on June 5, 1993 and received its English-dubbed Western release through Manga Entertainment in 1995. Alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell, it was one of three films credited with dramatically expanding Western awareness of adult anime in the 1990s. The Wachowskis have cited it as a direct influence on the Matrix franchise, and Kawajiri contributed to The Animatrix as a direct result. The score was composed by Kaoru Wada — whose credits in this catalog include the City Hunter films, Inuyasha movies, Puppet Princess, and Sorcerer on the Rocks. The North American video release sold more than 70,000 copies by May 1996, making it Manga Entertainment's best-selling title at the time. The original Manga Entertainment / US Manga Corps DVD was released in 2000 in an uncut widescreen edition with both English and Japanese audio. A 10th Anniversary 2-disc Special Edition was released in 2004. Manga Entertainment's North American license expired in 2012; Sentai Filmworks re-licensed and released the film on DVD and Blu-ray in December 2012 and January 2025.
