Oni for the PlayStation 2 is the only game ever made by Bungie West — a division of Bungie, the studio that would go on to create Halo — and one of the most fascinating cult relics of the PS2 era. Set in 2032 in a cyberpunk world heavily inspired by Ghost in the Shell and Akira, players control Konoko, an elite agent of the Technological Crimes Task Force fighting against a shadowy criminal organization called the Syndicate. As she cuts through mission after mission, buried truths about her own origin slowly surface in a story soaked in corporate conspiracy and identity crisis.

The gameplay blends third-person shooting with hand-to-hand martial arts combat — with the balance firmly tipped toward the latter. Ammunition is deliberately scarce and players can carry only one weapon at a time, making it far more efficient to strip enemies of their guns mid-fight and discard them when empty than to stock up. Hand-to-hand combat involves directional combos, throws, flips, cartwheels, and the ability to steal weapons directly out of enemies' hands mid-attack. Ten weapon types span handguns, rifles, rocket launchers, and energy weapons, and enemy classes each use distinct fighting styles — color-coded by tier from green to blue to red in strength.

Oni received mixed reviews on release — praised for its ambition, anime aesthetic, and combat concept, criticized for its controls and camera. The PS2 port was handled by Rockstar Canada rather than Bungie West themselves, which contributed to the control issues reviewers noted. Despite its rough edges the game has developed a genuine cult following over the decades, and its place in gaming history as Bungie's sole non-Halo PS2-era release makes it a compelling collector's piece.
