The Oregon Trail: 40th Anniversary Edition for the Nintendo 3DS is a fresh reimagining of one of the most iconic and beloved educational games in history, celebrating four decades of the classic franchise that introduced generations of schoolchildren to the hardships of 19th-century pioneer life. Players assemble a traveling party and set out from Independence, Missouri in a covered wagon, bound for the Willamette Valley in Oregon — managing food, supplies, health, and morale across thousands of miles of treacherous American frontier. Every decision carries weight: how much food to stock, when to rest, whether to ford a river or pay for a ferry crossing — and the ever-present threat of dysentery, broken wagon axles, snakebites, and exhaustion can strike at any time.
New to this 3DS version are fully playable hunting and fishing mini-games using the touch screen, wagon customization with different tarps and colors, and a complete achievements system that rewards thorough play with special unlockable items. The game takes full advantage of the 3DS hardware with vibrant updated visuals that breathe new life into the familiar frontier setting. A nostalgic pick for anyone who grew up playing the original in school, and a great introduction to the series for younger players discovering it for the first time.
