Phantasy Star - Sega Master System

Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System is one of the most important video games ever made — a landmark 1987 RPG that arrived in the same week as the original Final Fantasy on the Famicom and gave the Master System a title that made NES owners genuinely envious. Sega launched development of Phantasy Star so their Master System could compete with the burgeoning popularity of console RPGs, assembling a team led by designer Kotaro Hayashida and programmer Yuji Naka — who would later create Sonic the Hedgehog — with graphic design by Rieko Kodama, who went on to direct Phantasy Star IV. The team staffed a large number of women for the time, a rarity in the industry, and deliberately set out to create a unique RPG by adding 3D dungeon crawling, a female protagonist, and ample animation. The result was a science fantasy epic set in the Algol star system — three planets named Palma, Motavia, and Dezoris — ruled by the tyrannical King Lassic. The story follows Alis Landale, a young woman who witnesses her brother Nero's death at the hands of Lassic's robocops and swears revenge, assembling a party of three companions — the warrior Odin, the esper Noah, and the catlike creature Myau — to travel between worlds and bring Lassic's reign to an end.

Phantasy Star differed from its contemporaries in three crucial ways: its dungeons were displayed in a first-person perspective, its setting was science fiction rather than high fantasy, and its main character was female — all radical departures in 1987. The pseudo-3D first-person dungeon exploration was an absolutely astounding technical achievement for 8-bit hardware, giving the impression of actually moving through dark corridors in a way no console RPG had managed before. Overworld navigation plays out from a top-down perspective across the three planets, each with distinct biomes, towns, and dungeons to explore. Two weapon types play differently in combat: bladed weapons strike a single enemy hard, while guns hit every enemy simultaneously for consistent damage — a tactical distinction that gives party composition real strategic weight. A battery backup system saved progress directly to cartridge, allowing the game's enormous scope to be explored over multiple sessions — though it contributed to the game's notorious retail price. In the United States, Phantasy Star sold for $69.99 — the most expensive video game ever sold at the time, with some retailers charging as much as $80.00.

Phantasy Star is considered a landmark RPG for its use of predetermined characters and its science fantasy setting, and spawned one of gaming's most beloved franchises — Phantasy Star II, III, and IV on the Genesis, and eventually Phantasy Star Online. Electronic Gaming Monthly placed it at #26 in their "Greatest 200 Videogames of Their Time," making it the #2 RPG on that list. Sega Pro called it the best RPG on the Master System, and Boys' Life wrote that along with The Legend of Zelda, "Phantasy Star may represent the future of home video games." The game has since been re-released on Sega Saturn, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo Switch (as Sega Ages Phantasy Star with added quality-of-life features), but the original Master System cartridge is the authentic collector's piece — the only way to experience the game as it was first encountered in 1988, on the hardware it was built for.
