Japan's Sengoku period. Lord Karimata has murdered the master craftsman Monoyoshi Arima and stolen his greatest creations — life-size mechanical puppet warriors of extraordinary combat capability. Monoyoshi's daughter Rangiku has survived, and she wants everything back. Joining her is Yasaburo Manajiri, a masterless ninja and the last survivor of his clan, who has no particular reason to help her and does so anyway. Rangiku carries her own set of smaller puppets that she can control remotely — but operating them leaves her physically vulnerable and unable to defend herself. She needs a protector. Yasaburo needs a purpose. Together they cut through Karimata's forces across blood-soaked 16th century Japan in a story that lasts exactly as long as it needs to.
Puppet Princess is a 42-minute OVA directed by Hirotoshi Takaya — the same director as WXIII: Patlabor Movie 3 — with music by Kaoru Wada (Inuyasha films) and produced by TMS Entertainment. The original North American DVD was released by Media Blasters on August 28, 2001 at a suggested retail price of $14.99, rated 16+.
