River City Ransom - NES

River City Ransom for the NES is one of the greatest and most inventive games ever made for the console — a beat-'em-up from Technos Japan, the studio behind Double Dragon, that broke the genre wide open by fusing brawler action with open-world exploration and RPG progression. A villain named Slick has taken over River City High and kidnapped Ryan's girlfriend Cyndi. Alex and Ryan set out across a fully open River City — crossing between districts freely, backtracking at will — to defeat nine street gangs and fight their way to Slick.

The fighting plays like Double Dragon — punching, kicking, grabbing, and hurling enemies and environmental objects — but money dropped by defeated gang members can be spent in shops scattered across the city on food that permanently boosts stats, and on books that teach new fighting techniques like Grand Slam, Stone Hands, and Dragon Feet. The game tracks strength, defense, agility, willpower, and maximum health individually, and building a custom fighter through spending and exploration gives the game a depth completely absent from every other NES brawler. Nine gangs — The Generic Dudes, The Frat Guys, The Jocks, The Squids, and more — each have unique colors, attack patterns, and characteristics.

Originally released in Japan as Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari and in Europe as Street Gangs, the NES version released in North America in 1989. It has since been re-released on Game Boy Advance as River City Ransom EX and on Nintendo Switch Online, and spawned a long-running franchise including River City Girls.
