Run Saber - Super Nintendo

Run Saber for the Super Nintendo is a fast-paced side-scrolling action game developed by Horisoft and published by Atlus — and the only Strider-style game available on the SNES. In a pollution-ravaged future Earth, a desperate scientist named Dr. Bruford attempts to reverse environmental collapse using an experimental chemical, but mutates himself in the process and raises an army of clones to take over the world. Three cybernetically enhanced super soldiers — the Run Sabers — are dispatched to stop him. One of them, Kurtz, is captured and turned against the others. The remaining two, Allen and Sheena, must fight through five stages of Bruford's installations to bring him down and rescue their fallen comrade.

The gameplay is a direct spiritual successor to Capcom's Strider arcade game — every review at release made the comparison immediately. Players choose Allen (Thunder powers, forward-slashing attacks) or Sheena (Ice powers, upward-slashing attacks) and tear through stages with complete freedom of movement: wall-climbing, ceiling-hanging, sliding, drop-kicks, and mid-air attacks all available from the start. Screen-clearing Special Attacks powered by orb pickups drain everything on screen with either lightning or ice. A power jump similar to Super Metroid's Screw Attack adds a kinetic aerial option. Kurtz, the traitorous third Saber with fire powers, serves as a recurring mid-boss who must be fought multiple times across the campaign. Simultaneous two-player co-op lets Allen and Sheena tackle the entire game together.

GamePro awarded it 4 out of 5 at launch, praising the "fun action" and responsive controls. Nintendo Power recommended it specifically to Strider fans. The game was developed in Japan but never released there — a planned Japanese launch was cancelled for unknown reasons, making this SNES cartridge the only physical release of the game that exists anywhere in the world. Atlus published it in North America on June 8, 1993.
