Sacchi - Is This A Zombie? Manga

Is This a Zombie? is a gleefully unhinged supernatural harem comedy manga adapted from Shinichi Kimura's light novel series, with art by Sacchi and serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Dragon Age. Ayumu Aikawa is a high school boy who gets murdered by a serial killer and revived as a zombie by the stoic, softly beautiful necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe — who communicates only through written notes because her voice carries catastrophic magical power. Things spiral immediately when Ayumu accidentally absorbs the magic of Haruna, a chainsaw-wielding "Masō-Shōjo" (or "Magikewl Girl") from a parallel magical realm, and is forced to take her place fighting monsters called Megalos — in a frilly pink dress and matching accessories. He is a zombie. He is now also a magical girl. He is not happy about either.

The series runs on the comedic collision of its genre ingredients: zombie horror, magical girl transformation sequences, harem antics, vampire ninja roommates, and a deadpan straight-man protagonist who has simply stopped questioning any of it. Sacchi's art leans into fan-service and high-energy slapstick in equal measure, and the series has a genuinely good sense of comedic timing underneath all the chaos — Ayumu's increasingly deranged internal monologue, in particular, is a highlight throughout the run. As the volumes progress the plot thickens around the mystery of who murdered Ayumu and why, giving the series a surprisingly functional narrative spine beneath all the absurdity.

Adapted into two 12-episode anime seasons by Studio Deen in 2011 and 2012, both of which are available in English through Funimation/Crunchyroll.
