Fourteen-year-old crybaby Serena Tsukino discovers she is the legendary Sailor Moon when a talking cat named Luna gives her a magical brooch. Queen Beryl and the evil Negaverse are hunting for the Silver Crystal and harvesting human energy across Tokyo, and Serena — clumsy, emotional, and constitutionally unprepared for destiny — must fight them as Earth's guardian warrior. As she discovers her fellow Sailor Scouts — the genius Amy as Sailor Mercury, the fiery Raye as Sailor Mars, the strong Lita as Sailor Jupiter, and the mysterious Mina as Sailor Venus — and develops her confusing feelings for the masked vigilante Tuxedo Mask, the full scope of the Silver Millennium's ancient tragedy and her role in it comes into focus. The 82-episode DiC dub covers both Season 1 (the Dark Kingdom arc) and the beginning of Season 2 (the Doom Tree / Negamoon arc).

Sailor Moon is the landmark magical girl franchise created by Naoko Takeuchi, produced by Toei Animation and directed by Junichi Sato (Season 1) and Kunihiko Ikuhara (Season 2 onward — later Revolutionary Girl Utena). The DiC Entertainment English adaptation — produced in Canada with localization by Optimum Productions — aired in North American syndication from 1995 and on Cartoon Network from 1998, reaching a generation of Western anime fans who discovered the medium through it. Characters' names, attacks, and dialogue were substantially altered from the Japanese original. ADV Films acquired the DiC dub distribution rights and began releasing the series on DVD in 2002 across 14 individual volumes, covering all 82 dubbed episodes. Pioneer Entertainment separately held the rights to Sailor Moon S and SuperS. The ADV Films DVD volumes are now out of print. Viz Media re-licensed the complete franchise in 2014 and released uncut bilingual editions covering all five seasons.
