Sands of Destruction - Nintendo DS

Sands of Destruction for the Nintendo DS is a console-quality JRPG set in a stunning desert world where the oceans have dried up and been replaced by vast seas of sand — and where a powerful race of anthropomorphic beastmen known as the Ferals rule over humanity with tyranny and prejudice. Players take on the role of Kyrie, a gentle young man who unknowingly harbors the power to destroy the entire world, after being reluctantly swept up by Morte, a fierce and mysterious warrior leading a rebel group called the World Annihilation Front — whose radical mission is to end the world in order to end the corruption of the Ferals. The turn-based combat system makes inventive use of both DS screens, with colossal bosses towering across both displays and ground and aerial enemies appearing on different screens simultaneously. Quick Timer Events let players press button sequences mid-battle to enhance attacks, and characters can shout unique battle cries to boost attributes and abilities. Over 300 hand-drawn animated cutscenes bring the story to life, and a character and weapon customization system using a unique points system adds strategic depth. The game was written by Masato Kato — the acclaimed scenario writer behind Chrono Cross and contributions to the Final Fantasy and Chrono series — with a sweeping soundtrack composed by Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger and Xenogears fame. The game spawned both a manga adaptation and a 13-episode anime series in Japan, localized for North America by FUNimation.
