School Rumble is an influential romantic comedy manga written and illustrated by Jin Kobayashi, capturing the chaotic, hyper-energetic lives of students at Yagami High School. The narrative is driven by an absolute disaster of a love triangle. At its center is Tenma Tsukamoto, a delightfully clueless second-year student who is hopelessly in love with her eccentric, curry-obsessed classmate, Oji Karasuma. Meanwhile, Kenji Harima — the school's most notorious juvenile delinquent and an aspiring manga artist — harbors a massive, secret crush on Tenma. As Harima tries to reform his image to win her affection, and Tenma devises increasingly absurd schemes to confess to Karasuma, the series spirals into an escalating chain of misunderstandings that sweeps up the rest of Class 2-C.

Jin Kobayashi discards strict realism in favor of pure, over-the-top comedic effect, alternating between deadpan slice-of-life moments and high-stakes parody. The series thrives on its large, distinct ensemble cast, shifting viewpoints frequently to explore an intricate web of unrequited crushes, intense athletic rivalries, and surreal everyday occurrences. It is celebrated as a definitive hallmark of early 2000s shonen comedy, blending genuine youthful romance with kinetic, laugh-out-loud visual gags.
