Sekirei: Season One + Pure Engagement - Blu-Ray & DVD

Minato Sahashi has failed his university entrance exams twice. He is kind, not unintelligent, and completely unable to perform under pressure. Living alone in Tokyo, he has no girlfriend and no prospects. Then a girl falls from the sky and lands on him. She is Musubi — cheerful, powerful, and a Sekirei: one of 108 superpowered beings engineered from alien DNA who are compelled to find and bond with a human called an Ashikabi. Bonding is initiated with a kiss and grants the Sekirei access to their full abilities in exchange for absolute loyalty to their Ashikabi. Minato is Musubi's Ashikabi. He did not volunteer. He does not entirely understand what this means. What it means is that he is now a participant in the Sekirei Plan — a tournament organized by the megacorporation MBI in which Sekirei battle each other across Tokyo until only one remains. Minato, who has never wanted to fight anyone, accumulates additional Sekirei: the lightning-wielder Tsukiumi, the plant-controller Kusano, the wind-user Matsu who prefers surveillance, and the sword-wielding Kazehana. Season 2, Pure Engagement, escalates the tournament's stakes as MBI tightens its control of the city and the final stages of the plan approach.

Sekirei is a 12-episode first season and Sekirei: Pure Engagement is a 13-episode second season — both produced by Seven Arcs, directed by Keizo Kusakawa, written by Takao Yoshioka, and based on Sakurako Gokurakuin's manga serialized in Monthly Sunday GX under Shogakukan. Season 1 aired in Japan from July to September 2008 and Season 2 from July to September 2010. Both seasons were licensed in North America by FUNimation.

The FUNimation Seasons 1 & 2 combined BD+DVD box set was released May 7, 2013 — 650 minutes across multiple discs — and includes two OVAs: Kusano's First Shopping Trip and Two Gossip Topics (Episode 0). An Anime Classics reissue of both seasons followed July 5, 2016.
