Picking up directly from the cliffhanger ending of Shenmue II, Ryo Hazuki continues his journey into rural China in pursuit of Lan Di, the man who murdered his father. He arrives in the village of Bailu, where he meets Shenhua Ling — whose fate has been intertwined with his since the first game — and begins working to uncover the secret of the Mirrors that drove Lan Di to kill. The pace is slow and deliberate, consistent with the series' design philosophy: Ryo's life unfolds in real time across days spent training, earning money through odd jobs, gambling, and talking to every villager willing to share what they know.

The gameplay retains everything that defined the original games. Ryo explores Bailu Village and the merchant town of Niaowu on foot, interacting with hundreds of named NPCs who maintain individual daily schedules. Time management is central — stores open and close, people can only be found at specific times, and money earned through forklift driving and wood chopping must be budgeted between meals, lodging, and training expenses. Martial arts remain the core combat system, with new moves learned from masters encountered throughout the region. Capsule toy machines, darts, arcade games, and a fully realized horse racing gambling system provide entertainment alongside the main investigation.

Shenmue III: Complete Edition for the PlayStation 4 is the crowdfunded conclusion to Yu Suzuki's landmark open-world adventure series, funded through Kickstarter in 2015 after a 14-year hiatus and finally delivered to the fans who backed it. The Complete Edition bundles:
