Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2 — Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon for the PlayStation 2 is an occult noir action-RPG set in a richly atmospheric recreation of 1920s Taisho-era Tokyo, and the direct sequel to Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army. The story begins when a young woman named Akane Narita walks into the Narumi Detective Agency with a deceptively simple request — find a missing man named Dahn. What follows is anything but simple. Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th — silent demon-wielding detective, wielder of the katana, and agent of the Capital Defense Force — finds himself drawn into a conspiracy involving the insect-like Apollyons, the mysterious Tento organization, and an ancient force known as King Abaddon whose awakening threatens to unravel the fabric of fate itself. Alongside his sardonic talking cat Gouto and progressive journalist Tae Asakura, Raidou must navigate a world where the occult and the modern collide at every turn.
Combat takes place in real-time 3D environments where Raidou attacks with his katana and gun while commanding two demons simultaneously in battle — a significant expansion over the first game's single demon limit. A MAG balancing system governs how much magical energy Raidou and his demons can spend, adding a resource management layer to every encounter. Dodge and hide abilities let players approach enemies stealthily or avoid attacks mid-fight, and demon negotiation returns with more than twice the number of demons available to recruit compared to the original. Stronger demons can be created through fusion, with skills transferred between demons during the process to build increasingly powerful combinations. The Taisho Tokyo setting is brought to life through the iconic character designs of Kazuma Kaneko and a sweeping musical score by series veteran Shoji Meguro.
Developed and published by Atlus, Devil Summoner 2 launched in Japan in October 2008 and in North America on May 12, 2009. Atlus released the North American version in deliberately limited quantities — every first-print launch copy shipped with the rare collectible Raiho plush, a version of the beloved Atlus mascot Jack Frost dressed in Raidou Kuzunoha's detective uniform, housed alongside the game in an individually numbered display box. No PAL region release was ever announced. The Raiho Special Edition has become one of the most sought-after Atlus collector's items from the PS2 era, with complete copies commanding significant premiums on the secondary market.
