Full Metal Panic! is an action-packed military mecha manga adapted from Shouji Gatou's beloved light novel series, illustrated by Retsu Tateo and serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Comic Dragon.

Sousuke Sagara is a 17-year-old sergeant in the covert counter-terrorist organization Mithril — a hardened soldier who has spent his entire life on battlefields and knows exactly how to neutralize a threat, defuse a bomb, or pilot an Arm Slave mech into combat. What he absolutely does not know how to do is go to high school. Assigned undercover to protect the sharp-tongued, fiercely independent Kaname Chidori — a girl being hunted by a mysterious organization for reasons even she doesn't understand — Sousuke approaches ordinary teenage life with the same grim tactical seriousness he brings to everything else, with predictably chaotic results.

The genius of Full Metal Panic! is in the collision of its two genres. On one hand it's a legitimately tense military thriller, with detailed mech combat, global terrorist conspiracies, and real stakes. On the other, it's one of the funniest fish-out-of-water comedies in manga — Sousuke interpreting a love letter as a bomb threat, treating gym class as a live combat exercise, and remaining completely impervious to Kaname's increasingly exasperated attempts to get him to act like a normal human being. Retsu Tateo's art handles both registers with ease, keeping the action kinetic and the comedy expressive.

The manga adapts the first three volumes of the light novel and was one of the very first titles licensed by ADV Manga, helping establish the label's early catalog. The franchise spawned three anime seasons — the first two produced by Gonzo and Kyoto Animation respectively, with KyoAni's Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu leaning fully into the comedy side — as well as a third season from XEBEC in 2018. Fans of Getter Robo, Evangelion, or any mecha series with a strong comedic streak will find this an essential pickup.
