Skyblazer for the Super Nintendo is one of the most overlooked and underrated action platformers in the console's entire library — a game that routinely appears on hidden gems lists and leaves every player who finds it wondering why it wasn't a household name. Drawing from Hindu mythology, the story follows Sky, a young warrior and son of the great sorcerer Sky Lord, whose kingdom has been seized by Ashura, the demon Lord of War. With the sorceress Ariana kidnapped and the realm conquered, Sky sets out alone through over a dozen wildly varied stages to bring Ashura down.

The gameplay is the genuine article — a tight, responsive side-scrolling action platformer with a moveset that grows throughout the journey. Sky can jump, wall-climb, and brawl from the start, but magical abilities are unlocked progressively: firebalIs, the Comet Flash, the Fiery Phoenix transformation, freeze magic, and more, each with distinct tactical applications. Collecting 100 diamonds earns an extra life. Health-restoring green potions and magic-boosting red orbs are scattered across stages. Bosses are large, impressively drawn, and demanding — several are rendered with Mode 7 effects that rotate entire arenas and create visual set pieces unlike anything else in the genre. HonestGamers wrote: "graphically, this is about as good as it got during the 16-bit era."

The publisher credit on this cartridge is one of the most surprising in SNES history: Skyblazer was published by Sony Imagesoft; on a Nintendo console, in 1994, one year before Sony launched the PlayStation.

It represents one of the last cooperative releases between the two companies before they became direct competitors for the next three decades. Developed by Ukiyotei, a small Osaka studio founded by a former Capcom employee whose staff later joined SNK. Released in North America in January 1994 with zero advertising — which is widely cited as the reason so few people knew it existed at the time.
