In the high-fantasy world of the Slayers, a powerful, treasure-hungry sorceress named Lina Inverse travels the land blowing up bandit outposts and hoarding magical loot. Alongside her dim-witted but fiercely loyal bodyguard, Gourry Gabriev, Lina's chaotic adventures take a dark turn when they accidentally acquire an ancient, legendary artifact. Pursued by bizarre mercenaries, rival spellcasters, and ancient demons, the duo finds themselves caught in a cosmic struggle against Rezo the Red Priest, a legendary holy man desperately seeking to resurrect the dark lord Shabranigdu.
Combining laugh-out-loud slapstick comedy with high-stakes magical warfare, this foundational fantasy epic moves from lighthearted tavern brawls to world-shattering apocalyptic showdowns, setting the gold standard for fantasy anime adventures in the 1990s.
The Slayers (Season 1) is a 26-episode high-fantasy adventure series produced by E&G Films — the studio behind Blue Seed and various classic OVAs — directed by Takashi Watanabe, written by Takao Koyama, and based on Hajime Kanzaka's iconic 1989 light novel series, which remains one of the most popular and influential fantasy print franchises in Japanese history. It aired on TV Tokyo from April to September 1995 and has consistently stood as an untouchable pillar of fantasy-comedy anime among global fandom. The upbeat, memorable score was composed by Osamu Tezuka (not to be confused with the manga creator). The English dub was produced by Central Park Media under their Software Sculptors label. This is the classic Central Park Media 4-Disc DVD Box Set — 26 episodes across 4 DVDs, approximately 588 minutes runtime, rated 13+. Special features include interactive menus, central park media trailers, web links, and previews.
