Socket for the Sega Genesis is a speed-based platformer developed and published by Vic Tokai — one of the most earnest and unabashed Sonic the Hedgehog clones of the 16-bit era, and a genuinely enjoyable one at that.
Set in the year 2902, the villainous Time Dominator has constructed a time machine and is using it to steal treasures and artifacts from the past, creating dangerous rifts in the flow of time. In response, the Time Warp Patrol dispatches Socket — a cybernetic android duck with a power cord for a tail — to travel through time, track down the Time Dominator, and restore the space-time continuum. The trail leads through seven historically themed zones spanning the Stone Age, ancient China, Antiquity, and a gleaming futuristic cityscape, each rendered in the kind of colorful, parallax-scrolling Genesis art that made the platform's platformers so visually distinctive. The Time Dominator himself is an anthropomorphic bat in a top hat and monocle — a flamboyantly villainous design that is the game's most memorable original contribution.
Socket's gameplay is divided into three act types per zone: High Speed Areas emphasize momentum and speed with minimal enemies; Athletic Areas focus on precise platforming and jumping; and Labyrinth Areas task players with exploring maze-like stages to find the exit — a structure that directly mirrors the original Sonic the Hedgehog's Act layout. Socket charges up with electricity at the start of each level by plugging his tail into a power station, and his energy bar drains continuously throughout play — collecting floating lightning bolts scattered across each stage replenishes it, functioning identically to Sonic's rings. His electrically charged kick serves as his only attack move, though using it frequently drains his energy faster, adding a resource management dimension to combat. A time trial mode lets players race through the High Speed zones without enemies with recorded times, and a full sound test is available from the options menu. Diehard GameFan's reviewers scored Socket around 85%, praising its gameplay, graphics, and music — the latter being singled out as a particular standout by multiple reviewers.
Socket was developed and published by Vic Tokai and released on August 17, 1993 — timed to fill the gap between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and what would become Sonic the Hedgehog 3, targeting Genesis owners hungry for another speed-platformer fix. The game was completely forgotten about exactly one year and seventeen days after its release — the day Sonic 3 launched. Known in Japan as Time Dominator 1st, Socket is an unambiguous Sonic clone that makes no effort to disguise its inspiration, but benefits from the fundamental fun of the formula it so closely imitates. For collectors of obscure Genesis platformers and fans of the 1990s mascot-with-attitude era of game design, Socket is a charming and increasingly elusive piece of 16-bit history.
