Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis is one of the most important video games ever made — the title that cemented Sonic as a true franchise, introduced one of gaming's most beloved sidekicks, and became the best-selling game in Sega Genesis history. Dr. Robotnik has returned with a terrifying new weapon: the Death Egg, a satellite hovering above West Side Island, powered by the seven Chaos Emeralds he intends to steal. Special Stages now feature pre-rendered quasi-3D graphics — a dramatic technical showpiece for the Genesis hardware — where Sonic races through half-pipe tunnels to collect rings and earn Chaos Emeralds. Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds unlocks Super Sonic: a blazing golden transformation that makes Sonic faster, grants higher jumps, and renders him invulnerable — though it constantly drains rings to maintain. Ten Zones spanning iconic environments including Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Casino Night, Hill Top, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean, Metropolis, Sky Chase, Wing Fortress, and the Death Egg each bring a distinct visual identity and soundtrack that remain landmarks of 16-bit game design. Plugging Sonic 2 into a Sonic & Knuckles cartridge via its lock-on adapter unlocks Knuckles the Echidna as a playable character, able to glide and climb walls through the entire game.

Sonic 2 was released on November 24, 1992 — dubbed "Sonic 2sday" in a landmark $10 million global marketing campaign. It sold 400,000 copies in the US within its first week and 750,000 copies in the UK in its first week — accounting for 48% of all UK software sales and becoming the fastest-selling game in UK history at the time. By 2006 the game had sold six million copies worldwide, making it the second-bestselling Genesis game of all time behind the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Electronic Gaming Monthly awarded it Best Game of the Year for the Sega Genesis, calling it "the best Genesis cart to come along in a long time." Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is considered one of the greatest video games ever made and is listed among the greatest games of all time by multiple publications.
