Spot has become trapped inside a movie projector, and as he jumps from film to film he encounters classic Hollywood genres that form the game's varied level themes. The Genesis version's main levels are a pirate movie, a horror movie, an adventure movie, and a sci-fi movie — each with a completely distinct visual identity, enemy set, and environmental design that keeps the game feeling fresh from stage to stage. The game has often been overlooked since release partly because no one expects a game starring the red dot from 7 Up to be any good — which makes discovering it all the more rewarding. It stands out as one of the more well-crafted and entertaining platformers on the Genesis, particularly for its polished presentation and late-era Genesis graphical achievement.

Spot attacks enemies with an infinite supply of soda fizz projectiles and can collect power-ups that temporarily grant a three-way shot and a freeze shot that turns enemies into ice blocks usable as platforms. The Genesis version boasts impressive pseudo-3D isometric graphics that remained basically unchanged even in the subsequent PlayStation and Saturn ports, with well-animated sprites and skillfully drawn environments that help separate this entry from the sloppy, uninspired clutter of late-era licensed platformers. The isometric perspective is both the game's greatest visual asset and its central challenge — judging distances and platforming angles demands patience and practice.

Spot Goes to Hollywood was developed by Eurocom Entertainment Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment in North America exclusively for the Sega Genesis in 1995 — one of the final notable platformers released on the console before the 32-bit era took over. Sega Power awarded it 88 out of 100 and Consoles+ gave it 87 out of 100, commending the engaging level design and strong visual appeal. The game was later ported to PlayStation and Saturn in 1996–97 with FMV cutscenes and enhanced audio, but those versions received more mixed reviews — making the original Genesis release the purest and most fondly remembered version.
