Keitaro and Naru have finally made it into Tokyo University — the childhood promise that drove the entire series has been kept. Their feelings for each other are, characteristically, still a mess. Before Naru can say anything definitive, Keitaro breaks his leg at the welcoming ceremony and has to skip a semester. He decides to use the time working with Seta on an archaeological dig — which puts him conveniently far away from Hinata Inn and inconveniently far away from Naru. In his absence, a new manager arrives: Kanako, introduced as Keitaro's stepsister, with strict rules, a talent for disguise, and a very complicated relationship with Keitaro that she intends to resolve in his favor whether he wants her to or not. The residents of Hinata Inn do not take well to regimented living. Naru, watching someone else pursue Keitaro with considerably more directness than she has managed, begins to wonder if she has been too slow. When Keitaro returns, three way romantic chaos — Naru, Kanako, and Keitaro's own inability to process any of it — builds toward a conclusion the TV series never reached.

Love Hina Again is a three-episode OVA sequel to the Love Hina TV series and specials, directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki and based on Ken Akamatsu's manga — adapting the Kanako arc from volumes 11–12 more faithfully than the TV series managed. The OVA features upgraded animation quality and a notably more mature tone than the television series, following the manga more closely in both story and character development.

The three episodes were released in Japan individually between January 26 and March 27, 2002, titled "Kanako," "Keitaro," and "Naru." The North American DVD was released by Bandai Entertainment on September 2, 2003, collecting all three episodes on a single disc.
