Strider 2 - PS1

Strider 2 for the PlayStation is the long-awaited sequel to Capcom's 1989 arcade classic, and the definitive home version of both games in a single package. Set two thousand years after the original Strider, the Grandmaster has returned to seize control of the world. Strider Hiryu, the last member of a destroyed clan of elite ninja-assassins, is resurrected as a clone to stop him across five stages spanning Antarctic bases, outer space, a flying battleship, a medieval castle, and the Grandmaster's fortress.

The gameplay is pure speed and style. Hiryu dashes, double jumps, slides, wall-jumps, and clings to ceilings with effortless momentum, slashing through waves of enemies with his plasma Cypher at near-constant motion. A boost attack burns through a meter for long-range homing slashes. Stages end with large multi-phase bosses, and a performance ranking from E through Star grades each run. Beating the game unlocks rival Strider Hien as a playable character, who dual-wields ranged Cyphers and plays completely differently from Hiryu.

This PS1 package is the most complete release of Strider ever made. Finishing both games and saving the achievements on the same memory card unlocks a secret Mission 00 waterfall stage exclusive to this version. The original arcade Strider is included on a second disc, a near-perfect port of the 1989 coin-op that launched the franchise. The PlayStation version was a simple and clean port, given the PlayStation's similarity to the arcade's Sony ZN-2 board. Developed and published by Capcom, released in North America on July 29, 2000. The game later received a digital release on PlayStation Network but the original two-disc PS1 set remains the only way to own both games together as a physical package.
