Super Mario Land, released in 1989, was the first portable entry in the Super Mario series and a launch title for the original Game Boy. Unlike the mainline console games, it was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and led by Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi (rather than Shigeru Miyamoto), resulting in a unique, "offbeat" feel compared to the NES classics.

New Setting: Instead of the Mushroom Kingdom, the game takes place in Sarasaland, which is divided into four worlds inspired by ancient cultures (Egypt, Easter Island, and China).

The Protagonist's Mission: Mario’s goal is to rescue Princess Daisy (making her first-ever appearance) from the clutches of a space alien named Tatanga.

Shooter Stages: Two of the 12 levels break the standard platforming mold, transforming the game into a side-scrolling shooter where Mario pilots a submarine (Marine Pop) or an airplane (Sky Pop).

Power-up Changes: While the Super Mushroom remains, the Fire Flower is replaced by the Superball Flower, allowing Mario to throw a "Superball" that ricochets off walls at 90-degree angles to collect distant coins or defeat enemies.
