Released on April 2, 1992, Super Raiden for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM² is an enhanced conversion of the 1990 arcade vertical-scrolling shooter. Set in the year 2090 during an alien invasion of Earth, players pilot the "Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter" through ten vertically scrolling levels—expanding upon the eight stages found in the original arcade and HuCard versions with two exclusive CD-only levels. The game follows classic genre conventions where players cycle between the wide-range Vulcan Cannon (red) and the powerful Ion Laser (blue), supported by thermonuclear bombs and secondary missile systems. While maintaining the arcade's signature high difficulty, this version is specifically lauded for its vastly improved Redbook CD audio, featuring high-quality arranged music and enhanced sound effects.
