Tecmo Bowl for the NES is one of the most beloved sports games ever made — the first console football game to feature real NFL players and the title that defined arcade football for an entire generation. Ported from Tecmo's 1987 arcade game and released on NES in 1989, Tecmo Bowl secured a license from the NFL Players Association — not the NFL itself — giving it real player names and statistics based on the 1988 season while using city names instead of team names. Twelve cities are represented: Indianapolis, Miami, Cleveland, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, Dallas, New York, Chicago, and Minnesota.
The gameplay is fast, simple, and endlessly replayable. On offense, players choose one of four plays — each team's playbook reflects the strengths of their real-life roster — then take the field with nine players on each side. The passing game lets players cycle through receivers before throwing, while the run game puts the ball carrier directly under the player's control to dodge defenders. On defense, the same four plays are available, and guessing the offense's chosen play correctly often results in a sack or turnover. Three modes are available: single-player tournament against all 11 other teams culminating in the Tecmo Bowl itself, two-player exhibition, and a two-player coach mode where both players call plays only.
Developed and published by Tecmo, Tecmo Bowl released in North America in February 1989. It has since been re-released on Wii Virtual Console and other platforms, though the re-releases omit the NFLPA license and player names. The original NES cartridge with its authentic 1988 roster is the only way to experience the game as it was meant to be played.
