The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya - Blu-Ray & DVD

Ten days before Christmas, Kyon arrives at school to find that Haruhi Suzumiya no longer exists. Nobody remembers her. Itsuki is gone. Mikuru is an ordinary girl who has never met him. Yuki Nagato — silent, alien Yuki — is now a shy, bespectacled literature club member with no supernatural abilities and a quiet crush on Kyon that she handles entirely like a human being. The world is normal. Everything Kyon complained about is gone. He should, by any reasonable measure, be relieved. He is not. As Kyon investigates what happened and tries to find a way to restore the reality he did not know he wanted, the film becomes a meditation on what it means to choose the life you have — and what it costs to go back and choose it again. The sequence in which Kyon, having found the mechanism to restore everything, has to decide whether to actually use it is one of the finest scenes in anime film.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a 162-minute theatrical film directed by Tatsuya Ishihara and Yasuhiro Takemoto, produced by Kyoto Animation, written by Fumihiko Shimo, and based on the fourth Haruhi Suzumiya light novel by Nagaru Tanigawa. It was released in Japan on February 6, 2010 — coincidentally the date of an important plot event in the story — and was at the time of its release the second-longest animated theatrical film ever produced, surpassed only by Final Yamato. It earned over 850 million yen at the Japanese box office and ran in theaters for more than eight months. The score was composed by Satoru Kosaki with additional pieces by Erik Satie used throughout. Originally released in North America by Bandai Entertainment on DVD and Blu-ray on September 20, 2011 — after Bandai Entertainment's 2012 shutdown, the license transferred to FUNimation and then to Sentai Filmworks, who released a new BD+DVD combo on May 30, 2017.
