Bakumatsu Roman: Gekka no Kenshi is one of SNK’s most beautifully crafted fighting games—often considered the studio’s finest achievement in animation, atmosphere, and swordplay mechanics. Set in the late Bakumatsu era of Japan (mid-1800s), the story blends real history with supernatural elements as warriors struggle at the boundary between life and the underworld.
The game features a refined weapon-based combat system built around precision, timing, and momentum. Players choose between two styles—
-
Speed (fast chains and cancels)
-
Power (slower but devastating hits)
Each fighter has intricate animations, deep character lore, and dramatic special moves that reflect SNK’s peak artistry. Striking effects, cherry-blossom particles, traditional instruments, and painterly backgrounds combine to create one of the most atmospheric fighters on the Neo Geo.
Signature characters include:
-
Kaede – lightning-infused swordsman
-
Moriya – stoic ronin and series icon
-
Yuki – ice wielder tied to supernatural forces
-
Hao – fiery antagonist
-
Shigen – massive stone guardian
-
Juzoh, Akari, Hyou, and more
