The Operative: No One Lives Forever is a landmark first-person shooter developed by Monolith Productions and set in the swinging, sun-drenched world of 1967 — a game that marries the stealth sophistication of Thief, the enemy AI ambition of Half-Life, and the gadgetry of GoldenEye 007 with an irreverent spy comedy sensibility drawn directly from the great spy films and TV shows of the 1960s. Players assume the role of Cate Archer, a junior operative working for UNITY — a covert international anti-crime organization — who is dispatched to investigate a string of assassinations that have eliminated nearly half of UNITY's active field agents in just one week. Each agent was killed by a single mysterious assassin who always leaves a red lily at the scene. The trail leads straight to H.A.R.M., a mysteriously well-funded organization of flamboyant homicidal lunatics with designs on world domination, and the investigation sends Cate globe-trotting through Morocco, the Alps, East Berlin, a space station, and beyond — accompanied by hilariously eavesdropped enemy conversations and a cast of outrageous villains.

No One Lives Forever straddles stealth and action in nearly equal measure across 15 missions and close to 60 levels. Enemies respond to sound — noticing footsteps on hard floors, spotting movement through cameras and spotlights, and calling for reinforcements the moment an alarm sounds — making silence as viable and often preferable to direct engagement. Cate's arsenal of conventional firearms is matched by an extraordinary toolkit of gadgets disguised as everyday fashion accessories: lipstick explosives, hairpin lockpicks, belt buckle zip-lines, a robotic poodle, and more. The in-game music shifts dynamically to match the tension of each situation, and cinematically directed cutscenes — with outstanding voice acting that reviewers called sharper and more entertaining than most action films of the era — blur the line between gameplay and movie. Vehicles including motorcycles and snowmobiles appear in later levels as the environments open dramatically in scale.

Developed by Monolith Productions and published by Fox Interactive, No One Lives Forever released on November 9, 2000 to widespread critical acclaim — reviewers called it the first first-person shooter since Half-Life to genuinely surpass it, and it won numerous Game of the Year awards for 2000.
