In SonSon II, players take on the role of the monkey boy protagonist, often referred to as Son Gokū, who must set out on a perilous journey to rescue his three companions—the monk Sanzō, the pig Hakkai, and the kappa Sa Gojō—after they are abducted by a mysterious silhouette later revealed to be the Ox King. Loosely based on the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, the game shifts from its predecessor's side-scrolling shooter roots into an action-oriented platformer where Gokū battles through seven expansive worlds using an upgradeable magical staff. Along the way, players collect fruit currency known as Zenny to purchase health, magic spells, and equipment from shops, while searching for hidden keys required to unlock the final boss chamber of each stage
