BLEACH is one of the defining manga of the 2000s — a supernatural action epic written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump for fifteen years.

Ichigo Kurosaki is a surly, orange-haired high schooler with an inconvenient ability to see ghosts. His life is upended when a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki stumbles into his room mid-battle and, in a moment of desperation, transfers her powers to him. Suddenly Ichigo is the one responsible for cutting down Hollows — monstrous lost souls — and guiding the dead to the afterlife. It's a lot for someone who just wanted to pass his exams. What begins as a monster-of-the-week supernatural adventure quickly escalates into something far grander, pulling Ichigo into the hidden world of Soul Society, the bureaucratic afterlife ruled by the Gotei 13 — thirteen companies of sword-wielding Soul Reapers with their own politics, histories, and very strong opinions about Ichigo showing up uninvited.

Tite Kubo's greatest achievement with BLEACH is his design sensibility — few manga artists have ever had such a commanding eye for fashion, silhouette, and cool. Every character, from the most minor background Soul Reaper to the series' iconic villains, is visually distinctive and deeply considered. The series' aesthetic — black kimonos, ornate swords, and a color palette that mixes punk and traditional Japan — became one of the most widely imitated looks in shonen manga. The action sequences are explosive and dynamic, with each arc introducing new power systems, rival factions, and Bankai releases that became cultural touchstones. The Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arc in particular stands as a high point of mid-2000s battle manga.

Winner of the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category in 2005, BLEACH was adapted into a long-running anime by Studio Pierrot from 2004 to 2012, with the epic Thousand-Year Blood War arc receiving a definitive new anime adaptation beginning in 2022 to widespread critical acclaim. One of the "Big Three" of Weekly Shōnen Jump alongside Naruto and One Piece, this is essential shonen manga — a complete run at 74 volumes is increasingly hard to assemble and a serious collector's prize.
