Tohko Mizuno - Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time Manga

Akane Motomiya is an ordinary high school girl who, walking to school one morning with her childhood friends Tenma and Shimon, is suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into Kyō — a parallel world resembling ancient Heian-period Japan. There she is identified as the Priestess of the Dragon God, a chosen guardian destined to protect Kyō from a corrupt clan of demons threatening to consume the city. To fulfill her role she must gather eight guardians — the Hachiyō — each aligned with the elements of heaven and earth. Among them are Tenma and Shimon, who were pulled through with her, and six others she must find and earn the loyalty of before the darkness closes in.

Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time is a reverse-harem isekai shojo manga written and illustrated by Tohko Mizuno, serialized in Hakusensha's LaLa DX from 1999 to 2010 and published in parallel with the Koei otome game of the same name, for which Mizuno also worked on character design. The series blends Heian-era court aesthetics, mythology, and supernatural action with an emotionally driven ensemble romance — each of the eight guardians gets a distinct personality, backstory, and arc, giving the series more character depth than a typical reverse-harem premise might suggest. Mizuno's art is refined and expressive, particularly in its rendering of period costuming and supernatural imagery.

Adapted into a 26-episode anime series by Yumeta Company in 2004, licensed in English by Bandai Visual, followed by a theatrical film and two OVAs. VIZ Media published the English run under the Shojo Beat imprint between 2008 and 2012, serializing early chapters in Shojo Beat magazine before collecting the full series in 17 volumes.
